NKHATABAY NON COMMUNICABLE DISEASE CLINIC FACES INADEQUATE SUPPLY OF DRUGS

Health authorities in Nkhata-Bay have described the presence of only four Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) clinics and inadequate supply of drugs at the facilities as a worrisome situation resulting to overwhelming work and pressure on patients to buy their own drugs.

For instance, out of the 24 public health facilities, the NCD clinic coordinator, Jotham Cross says the four NCD clinics to cater for the district which also have undertrained staff in case management, only operate on Thursdays.

Cross suggests that if outreach clinics can be established in hard to reach areas like Usisya, Mzenga, Kavuzi and other areas, the patients interaction with medics may be simplified and resolve challenges of commuting long distances to access the services.

Sometimes due to these challenges, patients flout going for treatment thereby worsening their sickness conditions and they are more comfortable interacting with medical personnel in their communities than at the hospital, said Cross.

One of the concerned citizenry, Silesi Tchuwa has lamented that since the services are only being offered on Thursdays in the four available NCD clinics, congestion coupled with long distances of commuting to access the services remain a major burden.
